Privacy Policy
SpeedWise is built around a simple principle: no account, no profile, no tracking. This page explains exactly what data the app handles and why.
What SpeedWise reads on your device
While the app is running or its Live Activity is active, SpeedWise reads your iPhone's GPS:
- Latitude and longitude
- Heading (the direction you are travelling)
- Speed
- Reported GPS accuracy
This data is read by iOS via the standard CoreLocation framework, with permissions you grant explicitly. The app requests "Always" location access only because the Live Activity continues to update on the lock screen while you are driving in the background.
What is sent to our servers
To look up the speed limit for your current road segment, SpeedWise sends the following to our backend at api.speedwise.kasbah.dev:
- Latitude and longitude of your current location
- Heading (if available)
- GPS accuracy (if available)
- Standard HTTP request metadata (IP address, User-Agent
SpeedWise-iOS/, timestamp)
Your speed itself is never sent. All risk-vs-limit comparison happens on-device. Lookups happen at most a few times per minute thanks to a client-side debounce.
What we do NOT collect
- No name, email, phone number, or account identifier — the app has no sign-in
- No Apple Advertising Identifier (IDFA), no IDFV, no device serial
- No contacts, photos, microphone, or camera
- No third-party analytics SDKs, no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Crashlytics
- No advertising
How long server logs are kept
The backend keeps standard HTTP access logs (IP, timestamp, request path, response code) for up to 30 days for abuse detection and debugging. After 30 days the logs are deleted automatically. We do not maintain a long-term database of who looked up which coordinates.
Where data is processed
The backend runs on Oracle Cloud infrastructure (EU region) in a single self-managed VM under our control. DNS is hosted at Cloudflare. TLS certificates are issued by Let's Encrypt. None of these providers receive personal data beyond what is needed to route HTTPS traffic.
Your rights under GDPR
Because SpeedWise has no account system and the backend stores no long-term association between you and your queries, there is generally nothing personally identifiable to access, correct, or delete. If you believe you have a specific concern under GDPR — including access, rectification, erasure, or restriction — contact us at the email below and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
SpeedWise is intended for drivers and is not directed at children under 13.
Scope
SpeedWise currently provides estimates for France only. The app is a prototype; speed-limit data is sourced from Overture Maps and IGN BD TOPO and may be incomplete or out of date. Estimates are guidance only — drivers must always follow posted road signs and current French traffic law.
Changes to this policy
If we change how data is handled, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be highlighted in-app.
